Humberto Calderón Berti

Humberto Calderón Berti is a Venezuelan politician and oil expert. He was born in Boconó, a small town in the Venezuelan Andes. His career has included numerous governmental and private sector posts.

A geologist trained at the Central University Venezuela, he holds a master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Tulsa (Oklahoma, USA). Highlights of his extensive résumé include his tenure as Minister of Energy and Mines of Venezuela between 1979 and 1983, as President of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) between 1979 and 1980, as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1992, and as Deputy and President of the Energy and Mines Commission of the Chamber of Deputies between 1989 and 1993.

Between 2003 and 2016, he was president of the oil company VETRA Energy, active in Colombia and Mexico. He also held the position of Venezuelan ambassador to Colombia under Juan Guaidó’s provisional government after Colombia recognized him as president during the 2019 presidential crisis.
