The Golden Platter

Original title: La fuente de oro

Jerez de la Frontera in the thirties: Juan Pedro Cosano, who knows the city like the back of his hand, presents a novel with epic qualities and more than a hint of classic melodrama. The protagonists are the charismatic Beltrán de la Riva, the heir to a significant wine fortune, and Lele Gavilán, a girl from a poor background possessed of extraordinary beauty. They fall in love at first sight and plunge into a forbidden passion, condemned to a fate that already seems mapped out: Beltrán can allow himself a lover so long as he remains engaged to an aristocrat of ancient lineage, while Lele can hope for nothing more than a comfortable but economically dependent existence.

However, events take an unexpected turn, driven by the winds of history and dramatic circumstances but especially by Lele’s noble, indomitable character.

A story that masterfully mixes melodrama with period literature, set in one of the most interesting decades of the 20th century (from the Spanish Second Republic to the first post-war period).

A society as opulent as it is hermetic. A love that challenges conventions. A Spanish Downton Abbey.

A destiny-defying love.
