Joan-Ramon Laporte was Professor of Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Head of the Clinical Pharmacology Service at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. In 1982 he initiated adverse drug event reporting in Catalonia, which was the embryo of the Spanish Pharmacovigilance System. In 1983 he founded the Institut Català de Farmacologia, where hundreds of professionals were trained. He promoted the creation of several scientific societies and national and international research networks in Europe and Latin America. He has published hundreds of studies on clinical pharmacology and public health.
